The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Congress will create a group specifically to tackle illegal doping in Olympic Sports. Another group will be formed to progress the “Sports Program” and will address gender equality, new events, 2020 Olympic body weight categories, athlete quota and qualification system.
These changes have come off the back of the International Olympic Committee’s decision to reduce the number of weight classes to 14. This will change the structure and number of athlete quotas for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The IOC added five sports and 15 new events, but has not increased the total number of athletes competing. In addition, the additional sports and events are meant to increase urban appeal and promote gender equality.
